BSoW visit to BHI

BHI 150th Anniversary Celebrations

Sunday 8th June some of the students of the BSoW attended a series of lectures at The British Horological Institute at Upton Hall.

The day began with an introduction by George Daniels, a legend in his own lifetime amongst watchmakers.

The students heard from eminent watchmakers who specialise in completely individual or hand finished pieces such as John McGonigle from Ireland and Roger Smith from the Isle of Mann both specialising in individual pieces.

Charles Frodsham & Co who are now undertaking a limited series of watches using a George Daniels double escapewheel escapement.

Peter Speake-Marin spoke on the AHCI a supporting body for individual watchmakers.

Volker Vyskocil explained his design of a new movement with an original up and down work, Volker is better known as the author of the web site www.clockwatch.de

Gideon Levingston talked about the mathematics and science behind new materials used for balance springs.

Steven Forsey of Greubel Forsey from La Chaux-de-Fonds gave a brief history of his successful career as a watchmaker in Switzerland.

Alexander Schmiedt from Minerva spoke of the preservation of traditional watchmaking and the production of the Minerva chronographs.

There will probably never be another opportunity to meet so many prominent watchmakers in one place again. We all had the opportunity to talk with these eminent watchmakers in person. A fantastic day for us all.

Below is a picture of the students and myself with George Daniels who chatted with the students and gave some advice on becoming a successful watchmaker.
